7 Signs You Need Drug Treatment
Monday, February 7th, 2011

Most drug abuse start out small, usually with casual social use on the weekends. For many people, the problem never goes further than this, and drug treatment never becomes necessary. For others, use becomes more frequent, and they may need larger and larger doses of the drug to achieve the same effect. After a while, drugs become the only way to feel good, it becomes increasingly difficult to go without them, and attempts to quit are met with severe withdrawal. Once you reach this point, drug treatment is a necessity.

If you’re not sure whether you or someone you love is in need of drug treatment, here are some of the most important signs to look for:

  1. You feel that you need to have the drug every day or even multiple times per day, and you panic when you don’t have the drug.
  2. You have tried and failed to quit the drug multiple times in the past, and it’s clear that going cold turkey or trying to quit on your own is not going to work.
  3. You spend money on drugs even when that money should be going toward other things.
  4. You have resorted to immoral, unethical, or deceptive tactics in order to get the drug. If you feel shame about anything that you’ve done to support your habit, there’s a good chance you need drug treatment.
  5. You use the drug in response to stress or to deal with your emotions.
  6. Your drug use has been associated with other risky activities such as driving under the influence.
  7. Your habit continuously escalates. You spend more and more of your time and energy obtaining the drug and using it, and other aspects of your life have faded into the background. If your life is increasingly controlled by the drug, then you probably need drug treatment.
The Importance of LGBT Drug Treatment Programs
Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

Statistics show that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals are more likely to try drugs. Further, they have higher rates of substance abuse. Due to the fact that drug abuse is so common amongst the gay community, LGBT drug treatment programs are essential.

According to the Pride Institute, some drugs are more commonly used in the LGBT community than in the heterosexual world. For example, gay men have been shown to be more likely to use drugs including marijuana, stimulants, sedatives, cocaine and “party drugs.” Also crystal meth use has risen steadily amongst gay men in past years.

One reason that has been pinpointed for the use of party drugs like ecstasy, and GHB amongst gay men is their prevalence at circuit parties. Due to the fact that gay individuals can feel isolated from society, they often seek to belong to a group. This emotion, in part, motivates them to do drugs at these parties.

Statistics from the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment show that 20-25% of gay men and lesbians are heavy users of alcohol. This rate can be compared to 3%-10% of heterosexuals.

LGBT drug treatment programs focus on addressing the drugs that LGBT people are more likely to use. For example, often the issues include “poly-substance” abuse, which means abusing more than one drug in a short period of time. Drug users take part in this activity to heighten the impact of drugs.

LGBT drug treatment programs assist users to detoxify.  Once the detox process is over, counselors work with drug users in an individual setting, as well as in groups as well.  The process often continues with outpatient care, or sober living centers.

Those who enter LGBT drug treatment programs must learn to stop self-medicating and accept that they have a substance abuse problem.  This is an important first step in creating a long-term path of recovery.

When Does a Teen Need Drug Treatment?
Friday, January 28th, 2011

If your teen child has been caught doing drugs, you may be feeling unsure about how to handle this difficult and complicated situation. A single incident of drug use doesn’t necessarily warrant drug treatment, but if it’s a pattern, or if you suspect your child is not being honest with you, then you now face some difficult decisions. Do you force your child into drug treatment, or do trust punishment to work? Do you seek professional help, or do you handle it privately? These are not easy choices.

While every teen is different, there are some general guidelines for determining when a young person needs drug treatment. Of course, it can’t hurt to consult a drug treatment professional on these matters, but you can also make this decision on your own.

The most obvious sign that your teen needs drug treatment is if he or she has been caught using drugs repeatedly. This indicates either that your punishments have not gotten through, that his or her desire to abuse drugs is overwhelming, or both. In any case, it’s clear that more drastic measures are needed.

Another huge risk factor is an association of teen drug use with other dangerous behaviors. For example, if your teen drives recklessly or has unprotected sex in addition to using drugs, this is a sign that things have spiraled out of control and that he may be a danger to himself. This situation definitely warrants drug treatment, and the sooner the better.

Finally, another thing that should raise red flags is if your teen’s drug abuse is creating a polluted atmosphere in the home that affects other children in the household. Especially if the teen is mean or abusive to his or her siblings, you might want to consider taking them out of the situation and getting them help before it has ripple effects on your entire family. If this is a problem in your household, talk to a treatment professional.

Drug Treatment Addressed During National Drug Fact Week
Monday, December 13th, 2010

November 2010 marked the first National Drug Fact Week. Recovery Now TV commends this effort in helping to fight teen drug addiction and promoting teen drug treatment.

Los Angeles, CA.  December 13, 2010

Recovery Now TV noted the significance of the first annual National Drug Fact Week, which occurred November 8th-14th 2010. The National Institute on Drug Abuse sponsored this event and partners included Discovery, MTV and Community Anti-Drug Coalition of America. The primary goal of National Drug Fact Week is to end inaccurate myths amongst teens pertaining to drug abuse and drug treatment.

The week included special events in various communities as well as interactive web activities. Teen attendees received a booklet entitled “Drug Facts: Shatter the Myths.” Additionally, the 2010 National Drug Fact Week included a GRAMMY sponsored music video contest in addition to a Drug Facts Chat Day where thousands of teens were able to ask experts their questions about drugs through an online chat format.

Mike Cohan, the primary spokesperson for Recovery Now TV, stated, “I was very excited to learn of the first annual National Drug Fact Week. Opening up a line of communications with teens is essential for combating the use of drugs and alcohol.” As Recovery Now TV is dedicated to assisting drug users and their families withdrug intervention and drug treatment programs, the company commends other organizations that are working to stop drug use from beginning during the teen years.

Drug Treatment is one important topic that is discussed in detail during National Drug Fact Week. Topics discussed include how to encourage a friend who is a drug user to get help, as well as the effectiveness of drug treatment programs. The next Drug Facts Week is scheduled to take place from October 31- November 6th, 2011 and groups across the country are encouraged to host and sponsor individual events.

Is Marijuana Chemically Addictive?
Monday, November 15th, 2010
If you ask around, you will undoubtedly find people on both side of the fence when it comes to the question of whether or not marijuana is chemically addictive. There are those who are convinced that marijuana does cause a chemical dependency. Others believe that users only become psychologically addicted to marijuana. Yet, current evidence supports the fact that marijuana is not chemically addictive. However, this doesn’t mean that users will not become addicted in other ways and need to seek treatment for their addiction.

The main active chemical in marijuana is THC, which causes cellular reactions in the body that cause the drug high users seek to experience. However, THC also causes negative side effects as well such as increased heart rate and anxiety, and difficulty thinking.

THC changes the way that the brain’s hippocampus can process information. The hippocampus is responsible for learning, memory and emotions. Unfortunately, long term marijuana use can cause damage to the brain. While THC has negative effects on the body, it has not been proven to be chemically addictive.

Further, when marijuana addicts are not able to get the drug, they will experience significant physiological withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms include headaches, depression and irritation. Therefore, in many cases marijuana rehab and treatment is a necessity.

Some people wonder why there are drug rehab centers at all if marijuana isn’t addictive. There are a variety of reasons for this fact. First of all, those who are addicted to marijuana often have a lifestyle that is tied in with the drug. Researchers have speculated that those with a marijuana addiction are actually addicted to the high that the drug produces in their brain.

Due, in part, to the fact that marijuana isn’t chemically addictive, historically, there have been fewer treatment centers. However, marijuana users do indeed need help getting off drugs, just as users of any other drug would. Many people who try to quit marijuana have such a hard time doing so that they do indeed feel as though it must be chemically addictive!

Although the evidence to date supports the idea that marijuana creates a psychological and social dependency rather than one that is chemically based, the court is still out. Researchers continue to conduct studies on the impact of marijuana on the brain and the body. Therefore, it is possible that in the future we will discover more evidence about the addictive nature of marijuana of which we are not currently aware.
TREATMENT WORKS!
Monday, September 27th, 2010
Over the last decade, the entertainment world has brought much attention to drug and alcohol recovery. While the attention has sparked improved awareness of the disease of addiction, it seems to be lacking emphasis on one major message. In 2000, the movie 28 Days sparked awareness of what goes on in a treatment facility. In watching this movie, I did not get a feeling that treatment was for me. I saw people holding hands in a group and chanting prayers of hope. This was not attractive to me and aired on being hokey. Then, intervention brought forth a much needed awareness of the drug and alcohol intervention process as it followed addicts and their families into the horror and heartbreak surrounding active addiction. However, not much time was spent on the treatment process that follows an intervention. Most recently, shows such as Dr. Drew’s Celebrity Rehab and Sober House, have brought to light the entertaining issues which occur in the high-stress environment as vulnerable people go through the recovery process but not much emphasis was placed on the final outcome of treatment. I am grateful that the entertainment industry has brought drug treatment, intervention and rehab to the surface. However, one of the major messages which is only lightly touched upon (if at all), is TREATMENT WORKS! This is the major catalyst for the RecoveryNow project. Recovery Now and RecoveryNowTV.com was created to bring forth stories of hope. We present some of the most difficult cases – from the multiple relapser who was sneaking into the bathroom at work to inject heroin and crystal meth in a vein in her neck, to the mother of three children who was cooped up in her room with the shades drawn taking hundreds of pills in a day and contemplating suicide. Recovery Now shows how in a very short time, people can regain their lives back and live in the light of hope rather than in despair. Recovery Now TV shows people that Treatment Works. There is no guarantee that a person is going to stay sober for the rest of their life. However, going to treatment will pull someone from the depths of their addiction and help them get to the route of their problem and deal with issues head on. There are thousands of treatment programs throughout the country. There are programs which except health insurance for payment. There are programs which are free. There are programs which offer a payment plan based on a sliding fee scale. There are programs which offer a work exchange for treatment. The bottom line is, anyone no matter what their financial situation is or how bad their addiction is, can get help. Drug Treatment, Intervention and rehab works. Finding Appropriate Adolescent Drug Treatment
Thursday, April 29th, 2010
A parent or other caring adult who sees their teen suffering from substance abuse is put in a terrible situation. They want to help resolve the problem, but often don’t know how to best go about it. Because they are not trained in the field of addiction and do not have the knowledge or resources to address the problems of substance abuse, they often feel frustrated, helpless, and afraid for the health and safety of the young adult. Fortunately, there are options. Adolescent drug treatment can offer help and guidance for teens who are struggling with substance abuse. Adolescent drug treatment is a kind of therapy that recognizes the specific needs of younger people who are struggling to end substance use, abuse, dependency, or addiction. This therapy is aimed directly at teens and children, and therefore carefully considers their circumstances in every therapeutic decision. Because younger people often have different ways of communicating, or different comfort levels when talking about their personal problems, using a method of therapy that understands these challenges can be the key to success. Once an individual is participating in adolescent drug treatment, it is important that he or she continue to receive support outside of therapy as well. Substance abuse can lead to problems in all areas of the young adult’s life. Their schoolwork may have suffered, they may have stopped participating in extra-curricular activities, and their relationships may have deteriorated. While it is of the utmost importance that the underlying problem of substance abuse be addressed and treated, other areas such as those listed above should also be considered. Adolescent drug treatment can be a doorway into a new life. Young people who are truly committed to moving their lives out of the cycle of use, abuse, dependency, and addiction and into sobriety can find the help they need at an adolescent drug rehab treatment center. The support, encouragement, and expertise that come from these centers can make the difference between success and failure along the road to recovery. These centers also offer the added benefit of support for the adults in the young addict’s life, because the more people who are involved in and committed to sobriety, the greater the chances of achieving lasting addiction recovery from substance abuse.

Because, of the complexity of addiction to both drugs and liquor you need to make sure that the person you care for goes to a center that has the ability to help with a variety and combination of addictions. This can make a tremendous difficulty in their overall recovery. Contact a treatment program in your area in order to help the person you know that needs the help that only a rehab center can provide. The first steps you can take in getting drug rehab alcohol help is to contact a program that is in your area. By doing this you’ll insure that they are close to where you live so that it can be easy for the person you care for to go in for treatment. It can also make it easier for you to visit them and lend your support while they are getting treatment. Don’t let addiction take over a person’s life. Do what you can today in order to give them the help that they may not be able to seek on their own. When a person begins drug rehab alcohol treatment they will talk with the medical professionals at the program about the degree and severity of their addiction. They will be asked about the amount of dangerous substances they are using and in what combinations. This will be very helpful because, it will give them a sense of how the addiction could be working in the addict’s body. This will be imperative when it comes to treatment so make sure you do what you can to lend support. You may also be interviewed and asked questions about the behaviors of the addict. Getting someone drug rehab alcohol treatment is something you can do. It’s not very difficult and there are many ways that you can lend support because, treatment centers are open to helping people in anyway possible to stop their addiction. By understanding that you can do something you’ll know that you have the ability to lend support in a way that is meaningful and beneficial for the person in your life. Outpatient Drug Treatment and Successful Healing
Tuesday, April 20th, 2010
Individuals who are suffering from substance use, abuse, dependency, or even addiction often cannot comprehend that they do in fact have a problem. One of the most insidious things about substance abuse is that it tends to blind users to their own reality. Individuals who do become aware of their problem, either through a startling wake up call or through the intervention of someone else, can change their lives for the better. One way to help ensure success is to participate in outpatient drug treatment. Outpatient drug treatment is a form of therapy that helps individuals address and overcome their substance use, abuse, dependency, or addiction. This kind of therapy is offered in many different forms and in many different settings. It is important to find the right match, or else the benefits of this kind of therapy can be lost. Be sure to carefully inspect the facility, meet the staff, and ask lots of questions before deciding which program is the best fit for your needs. Once you find the right place, you can be assured that you are doing something positive for yourself, or for someone you love who is struggling with substance use, abuse, dependency, or addiction. Finding the right outpatient drug treatment program can add tremendously to the chances of successfully transitioning from a life defined by substance use, abuse, dependency, or addiction to a life that is free from these issues. Good programs will provide the necessary support for achieving this transformative goal. These programs have the right kind of environment, and are staffed by the right kind of people, people who are not only empathetic, but who are trained in how to best facilitate recovery from all different kinds of addictive substances. Dedicated participation in outpatient drug treatment can be rewarded with a new lease on life. An individual who is committed to his or her sobriety can find help and encouragement in outpatient drug treatment. These individuals can also be sure to have a community to count on, a place to feel safe in, and a way of life to rely on along the difficult but infinitely rewarding road to permanent recovery.
Adolescent Drug Treatment and Getting Help
Wednesday, April 14th, 2010
Drug abuse has become a serious problem among all segments of the population. No one, no matter what their income level, gender, or education level, can fall prey to the problems of drug abuse. Perhaps the most heartbreaking aspect of the rise in drug abuse is how much it is affecting young people today. Teen substance abuse is widespread, and all too often it is not recognized by parents or other adults. Fortunately, however, adolescent drug treatment is widely available to help these most vulnerable members of society. Treatment for drug abuse can take many forms. Adolescent drug treatment is often most effective if it is particularly focused on the problems and concerns of adolescents in general. As parents and teachers have long known, teens often respond best to their peers, or to those they admire or respect. Treatment geared towards adolescents should use this tendency to help speed recovery from drug addiction. More and more teens that have made it through the trials of addiction and eventual recovery are willing and available to other teens in trouble. Adolescent drug treatment should also recognize that adolescents are often in denial about their problem. Because drug use is common among teens and is even positively referenced in pop culture, many teens do not see drug use as a problem. Early education about the dangers of drug use can help reverse this mode of thinking, but education alone may not be effective if the teen is already in the grips of addiction. At this point, it is still important to educate teens about the present dangers of drug use, but it may be more helpful to focus on the problems that will likely arise in the future if their substance use continues. Substance abuse care in general and adolescent drug treatment in particular can be a powerful means of effecting positive and lasting change in a drug addict’s life. It is particularly rewarding to help teens with their addiction problems, as there is still so much potential for success in a program. Adolescent drug treatment has advanced considerably in the last few years, and is a resource that should definitely be used by caring adults.
Outpatient Drug Treatment and Getting Sober
Sunday, April 4th, 2010
When addressing the problem of drug or alcohol dependency, there are many different decisions that need to be made. If the hope is for effective and lasting relief from the problems associated with addiction, some kind of structured treatment will likely be needed. One potentially helpful option is outpatient drug treatment. While this is not the only avenue to be explored, it does have many attributes that make it an attractive treatment option. Outpatient drug treatment offers many options for those who are seeking to rid themselves of addiction while still maintaining an independent life. Outpatient treatment is much more flexible than residential treatment, as there is no need to uproot your life, change your neighborhood, or even potentially lose your job in order to participate. Outpatient treatment may also be more discreet than other forms of treatment, as participants can carry on with most of their normal activities outside of treatment. Such treatment may also be better for those who have limited time or unusual schedules, as it is often available at a wide variety of locations and at a number of different hours. When deciding on the right kind of outpatient drug treatment program for you or your loved one, you may want to consider several additional factors. There are a variety of different programs available, so make sure you find one that is the right fit. For example, you may want to consider if a faith-based program or a scientifically based will best meet your needs. There are also programs designed specifically for men or for women, and there are programs that can offer additional treatment, such as mental health treatment, beyond drug and alcohol treatment. While there is no one answer to the problem of drug and alcohol addiction, outpatient drug treatment is a viable and often very effective way to address it. Outpatient drug treatment can help restore lives to balance and put them back on track. Given the wide array of outpatient treatment plans available, at least one should be able to help you or your loved one win the battle against drug or alcohol addiction.

Marijuana Treatment for Teens
Thursday, January 21st, 2010

This article will give you useful information if you are researching marijuana treatment for a young adult in your life. The use of drugs and alcohol is among the rise in young adults in the United States. If you expect that your teen could be using drugs then you should know you’re not alone. Many public and private programs are available to help your teen stop their addiction and be able to live a more fulfilling life. It can be difficult talking with your teens about drugs, but if you speak with a healthcare professional, they can give you advice on how to do so.

Many parents may not have an understanding of what marijuana treatment is going to consist of. The first thing to understand is that your child is using illegal drugs and they can face serious consequences. Not only could they be arrested and face jail time, they can permanently scare their future if they are found with a large quantity of pot. So, finding help for your teen will not only help them right now get their life back in focus, it’ll also help them in the future.

Don’t feel that you need to talk to your teen about their drug use if it makes both of you uncomfortable. Sometimes, it’s best to have a professional step in and speak with them. That person can talk with them about going to a marijuana treatment program that will help them recognize the problem they have and be able to stop using. A good program will specialize in treating young adults and have a system that should be time proven. Your teen will probably be separated from you at an outpatient center. They need this space to be away from the lifestyle influencing their drug use and be able to be with their peers who are also receiving treatment.

As your teen learns more about the dangers that drugs present, they’ll be able to see how their life will change. While at a marijuana treatment program, your teen will understand that the drug use may have been caused by events in themselves that they had no control over. By speaking with their peers about drug use, they’ll be able to create a network to help support them during their rehabilitation and after wards. When you call a marijuana treatment center in your area, make sure that they’ve worked with young adults in the past. If they have, then you’ll know that help is out there for them and that someone has the experience and knowledge necessary to help your teen.
