Could Purdue Pharma Be Recruiting Children For Oxycontin Study?
According to Salem-News.com, Purdue Pharma, makers of Oxycontin, are currently recruiting participants, ages 6-16, for clinical trials of Oxycontin for "moderate" to "severe" pain. Marianne even includes an ad, looking for participants.
In the information below Marianne's piece, it seems that Purdue Pharma is, in fact, recruiting children for Oxycontin studies. The children must already be taking opiates and be opiate tolerant. I think that if this medication is going to help children in severe pain, then it may be helpful, but I fear that approving this drug for children could lead to so many more problems, especially if doctors are prescribing it for moderate pain.
Introducing such a strong opiate to someone so young could have severe long-term effects, especially concerning addiction. Furthermore, approving Oxycontin for children could create a situation where addicted parents are using their children to doctor-shop. Although, it pains my heart to think about children in severe pain, I think the implications of this could be disastrous!
