2-Year-Old Boy High On Heroin

A 22-year-old mother was arrested on drug charges, and her 2-year-old son was taken to the hospital when deputies became concerned that he was high on heroin. According to KIMATV.com, Thursday night police stopped the woman’s car, and her boyfriend, who was a passenger had several warrants. He was arrested, and during his arrest officers found what appeared to be a needle loaded with heroin and other paraphernalia in the mother’s purse. The mother was taken to jail on suspicion of heroin possession and reckless endangerment....

Man Suspected of Stealing Heroin From Police Evidence Trailer Died With Opiates in His System

An Illinois man suspected of stealing heroin from a police evidence trailer died from heart disease with opiates in his system. According to UPI.com, the man died within days of the heist of more than 6 pounds of heroin. Sheriff’s deputies claim that the man learned police were storing confiscated drugs in an outdoor evidence trailer.

Soul Coughing Frontman Publishes Memoir, “The Book of Drugs.”

Mike Doughty, front man for the 90s band, Soul Coughing, speaks out in his new book, “The Book of Drugs.” Soul Coughing rose to fame in the beginning of the alternative rock era, with singles like “Super Bon Bon” and “Circles.” According to The Metro West Daily News, Doughty was only 22 when the band formed, and eight years later they broke up.

Two Unconscious Men Rolling Down Street in a Car

Two New York men were found unconscious and possessing heroin, while rolling down the road in a vehicle. According to TheDailyPeekskill.com, police were called to the Beach Shopping Center after witnesses observed a vehicle rolling down Dayton Lane with two unconscious men inside.  Witnesses managed to stop the rolling vehicle.  Both men had hypodermic needles in their arms, and glassine bags containing heroin were also found in the car.  The EMS promptly responded, reviving both men on the scene.  The two men were held for arraignment.

Illicit drug use in some Muslim countries carries a stigma that keeps many from getting the treatment they need. According to NYTimes.com, every Monday and Thursday morning, a man rides the bus for an hour and a half from his home in Kuala Lumpur to the Ah-Rahman mosque. After reciting his prayers, the man climbs the stairs to the mosque’s mezzanine level, where he gives a urine sample and consults with a doctor.

Two Teenagers, Passed Out With 71 Heroin Packets

Police found 71 packages of heroin on two teenagers who were passed out at a gas pump Saturday morning. The teens pulled into the gas pump, but never got out of the car. According to southbedtribune.com, the gas station attended alerted police when he noticed the two were unconscious. The police had to physically remove the kids from the car, and when they reported having taken heroin they were transported to the hospital. They were later released to their parents.

26-year-old Allisha Ann Haltom is sentenced to 4 years, suspended sentence and 5 years probation after her 3-month-old infant suffered skull and leg fractures at the hand’s of the child’s father. Allisha plead guilty to child abuse or neglect, admitting that she was unable to protect her baby girl because of her drug use.

Mother Arrested After Shooting Her Children Up With Heroin

An Ohio mother arrested on several charges after she allegedly shot up her 14 and 16-year-old daughters with heroin. Shantel Parker was arrested after a complaint was made against her. The home was searched, and evidence was seized from the home. Parker’s neighbor said he is not surprised, as he had seen her smoking pot with her children on the front porch.

Mexican researchers have been working on a “vaccine” to curb the effects of heroin. According to the Chicago Tribune, this formula, that has been patented in the United States has proven effective in mice, and they hope to begin trials on humans soon. The vaccine works to make the body resistant to heroin, so users no longer get the pleasure, or rush, when they take heroin.

    We all hear about programs like DARE, aimed at prevention of substance abuse.  But this church takes a different approach on fighting the problem of substance abuse in our young people.  They plan to educate the parents about the signs and symptoms of drug abuse.  They set up a mock bedroom of a young person, chock full of signs of drug use.  Educating parents to look for signs could help more kids get treatment before the problem spirals out of control.  Personally, I think education is the key to reducing substance abuse, especially among young people.
