Rehab Center
Are you choosing the right Rehab Center for your child?
Being a parent is never easy, and it becomes even more challenging when your child becomes addicted to alcohol or drugs. No matter what kind of addiction you may be battling against, you need to contact a Rehab Center, especially if the addiction is already severe. If you try to handle it on your own, you might just make things worse.
Families tend to be too soft and enabling, which can make the addiction worse. Of course, you cannot just choose any Rehab Center. There are several factors to consider when choosing rehabilitation centers.
Scan the programs
The keyword to an effective rehabilitation program is "holistic." Whether you choose a conventional Rehab Center staffed with medical professionals or a facility that combines medicine with spiritual counseling is up to you and the patient. The important thing is that the Rehab Center does not only focus on one aspect of the addiction. One's dependence to a substance is not only caused by physiological factors. Neither is it a purely psychological problem.
No matter what type of treatment the Rehab Center administers to your child, it should cater to both the physiological and psychological needs of the patient. In other words, look for a facility that detoxifies your child from the substance, but also provides in-patient counseling and life-coaching programs so that s/he may live as a healthier person once released from the center.
Open-minded experts
You should also look for a Rehab Center that is run by capable and open-minded professionals. They should be armed with counseling skills to treat the addiction as well as be prepared to treat other factors which may have caused the addiction in the first place. For example, your child may have been suffering from a personality disorder before the addiction to drugs or alcohol began. If this is the case, the personality disorder should be treated in addition to the addiction.
On the other hand, if the triggers for the addiction were peer pressure or problems in the home, the Rehab Center should also help the child process these factors. External factors usually cause the addiction, which is why in-patient programs are so important. If the environment is causing the addiction, it's important for the recovering individual to be removed from all types of temptations first.
Involvement of the family
One of the markers of a good Rehab Center is the fact that they always put the family into the equation. Family members will be the support system of the patient once he is out of the center, and it is imperative that the members be given ample orientation about his/her condition.
Some families are so wounded by the addiction that when the individual is released in their care again, they realize they are not quite ready to take him/her in. This lack of support can lead to the patient regressing and relapsing back to the addiction. A capable Rehab Center would try to mend the family so that once the recovering addict is re-introduced in the home, they can fight the big fight against addiction as a team.
